I'm Having a Baby - What Should I Do About My Benefits with MTM?
Congratulations on your growing family! Having a baby is a qualified life event, which allows you to make certain changes to your MTM benefits outside of annual enrollment. Acting within the required timeframe is important to ensure coverage for your child.
Important First Step - Report Your Life Event
You must report the birth or adoption of your child in Workday within 30 days of the birth or adoption of your baby.
In Workday, you will:
- Select Birth/Adoption as your qualifying life event
- Add your child as a dependent
- Upload required documentation (such as a birth certificate or adoption paperwork)
Benefits You May Want to Review or Change
***All changes must be made during your life‑event window.***
Coverage is effective retroactive to the child’s date of birth or adoption, as long as you complete the process on time. Keep in mind that additional benefit premiums will be taken from your paycheck for the periods of coverage for prior pay periods. Timely enrollment in coverage will help reduce the additional premiums all at once.
Medical, Dental, and Vision Coverage
- Add your child to your MTM medical, dental, and/or vision plans
- Change medical plans if a different option better fits your new family’s needs
- Update coverage tiers (employee -> employee + child/family)
Spending Accounts (FSA, HSA, Dependent Care FSA)
Having a child can change how you use tax‑advantaged accounts:
- Increase Health Care FSA contributions for medical expenses
- Enroll in or update a Dependent Care FSA if you will use daycare or childcare services
- Review HSA contributions if enrolled in the HDHP
Life Insurance
Having a baby is a key time to review life insurance protection:
- Add Supplemental Life Insurance for your new baby
- Increase your own supplemental life coverage if neede
- Update your beneficiary designations as necessary
- Beneficiary updates are critical and should be reviewed anytime you experience a major life change.
Disability Insurance (STD & LTD) and Voluntary Benefits
You may want to update protection for your growing family:
- Increase Supplemental Life Insurance
- Add child coverage where available
- Add Long Term Disability Insurance
- Add family coverage to Allstate Accident, Hospital Indemnity, Critical Illness, or Cancer Insurance
- Enroll your family in MetLife Legal Plans
- Expand coverage under Allstate Identity Protection or Pet Insurance, if applicable
Don't Forget - Update Your Beneficiaries
A new child is a good time to review beneficiary information for:
- Life insurance
- Retirement plans (401(k))
Life insurance beneficiary updates are made directly in Workday while the 401(k) benefit updates are made on your account at John Hancock.

If you have questions or aren’t sure what changes make sense for your situation:
