I Just Got Married - What Should I Do About My Benefits with MTM?

Congratulations on your marriage! Getting married is a qualified life event, which means you have a limited time to review and update your MTM benefits to better protect you and your spouse. Taking action promptly ensures your coverage reflects your new family situation.

Important First Step - Report Your Life Event

You must update your marital status in Workday and change your benefits within 30 days of your marriage.

In Workday, you will:

  • Change your marital status on the Personal screen
  • Report your marriage as a life event using the Benefit Life Event task
  • Upload required documentation (such as a marriage certificate)
  • Review and update your benefit elections

Once submitted, your new elections will generally become effective the first day of the month following completion and approval of your enrollment.

Benefits You May Want to Review or Change

***All changes must be made during your life‑event window.***

Medical, Dental, and Vision Coverage

  • Add your spouse to your MTM medical, dental, and/or vision plans
  • Change medical plans if a different option better fits your new family’s needs
  • Review dependent eligibility rules before enrolling your spouse and step-children (if applicable)

Spending Accounts (FSA, HSA, Dependent Care FSA)

Marriage can impact how you use tax‑advantaged savings accounts:

  • Adjust Health Care FSA contributions if adding a spouse and step-children (if applicable)
  • Review HSA eligibility if you or your spouse have additional coverage
  • Consider a Dependent Care FSA if you now share caregiving responsibilities

Life Insurance

Marriage is a key time to review life insurance protection:

  • Add Supplemental Life Insurance for your spouse and step-children (if applicable)
  • Increase your own supplemental life coverage if needed
  • Update your beneficiary designations to reflect your spouse.
    • Beneficiary updates are critical and should be reviewed anytime you experience a major life change.

Disability Insurance (STD & LTD)

Your income protection needs may change:

  • Review Long‑Term Disability (LTD) coverage if your spouse relies on your income
  • Ensure you understand benefit levels and who is financially protected

Voluntary Benefits

Marriage may increase the value of optional benefits:

  • Add family coverage to Allstate Accident, Hospital Indemnity, Critical Illness, or Cancer Insurance
  • Enroll your family in MetLife Legal Plans
  • Expand coverage under Allstate Identity Protection or Pet Insurance, if applicable

Don't Forget - Update Your Beneficiaries

Some beneficiaries do not automatically update when you get married. Be sure to review and update beneficiaries for:

  • Life insurance
  • Retirement plans (401(k))

Keeping beneficiary information up to date ensures benefits are paid according to your wishes.

Need Help?

If you have questions about what to change or how your benefits work after marriage:

  • Use Workday prompts during your life‑event task for guidance

Reminder

Life‑event changes are time‑sensitive. If you miss the enrollment window, you will have to wait until the next annual enrollment period to make changes.
